One scoop was never the plan.

The caramel finds its way into every little crease. The spoon comes back for one more. Let's make a little room for the sort of dessert that turns an ordinary evening into a stay-in kind of night.

THE BNH REVIEW

A little ice cream shop feeling. Your own kitchen.

We chose the Navy NC701BL for the way it brings two dessert rituals together: a proper scoop beside something warm, or a soft-serve swirl to finish a cone. Its 13 programs give you room to explore, while making the base yourself lets you choose the ingredients and sweetness within the recipe's guidance.

Who we picked it for

The person who already has a favorite bowl for dessert. The family that would enjoy a little cone-night ritual. The cook who likes planning a base ahead, then choosing the finishing touches when everyone is ready.

For scoopable ice cream, the MIX-IN program can fold compatible extras into the finished base. For soft serve, keep the base smooth and put the crunchy bits, fruit and sauces on after dispensing.

A few things to make room for

This is a prepare-ahead machine: the base needs at least 24 hours of level freezing before you process it. A fresh liquid mixture will not become ice cream on demand. You will also need freezer space for the pints and a clear, level spot on the counter for the machine and its dispensing setup.

The pint, paddle, lids and soft-serve components add a few pieces to the cleanup. If you mostly want a spontaneous bowl with very little preparation or washing up, think about whether this ritual fits your evenings.

THREE LITTLE REASONS TO STAY IN

Something sweet for your evening.

A vanilla swirl with maple caramel, chocolate with raspberries, or a scoop over warm cinnamon apples. Pick your favorite, make the base a day ahead, and leave the finishing touches for dessert time.

Before you start

Each recipe is one batch for one 16-ounce Swirl Pint. Keep the base at or below MAX FILL.

Use one 16-ounce CREAMi Swirl Pint per batch; stop at MAX FILL. Close its base before filling. Cover and freeze upright and level for at least 24 hours.

Remove the storage lid. With the machine plugged in on a clean, dry, level counter, put the pint in the outer bowl. Secure the paddle in the outer-bowl lid, lock the lid, and install the bowl; twist its handle right until it clicks. Follow the recipe program. Lower the bowl, check texture, and RE-SPIN if crumbly, checking between runs.

For soft serve, remove the paddle lid and outer bowl. Fit the dispense lid and Swirl Press as in the manual. Mount the pint in the left dispense area, pull the drip tray out, and turn the base fully to SWIRL before pulling the handle. Keep toppings outside the pint; add after dispensing.

For leftovers, close the base, clean the nozzle cavity, smooth the dessert surface, cover, and refreeze level. Process hard leftovers on the original program.

Maple Caramel Vanilla Soft Serve

A vanilla swirl, a little maple caramel, and a quiet moment after dinner. Make the base a day ahead so the fun part is ready when you are.

1 Swirl Pint; about 4 small servings

About 15 minutes active, plus at least 24 hours freezing and any re-spin.

What you'll need

Vanilla base
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant vanilla pudding mix, dry powder (not cook-and-serve)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Maple caramel finish - BNH serving suggestion
  • 1/4 cup prepared caramel sauce
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 4 small plain ready-made doughnuts, optional, one per serving

Let's make it

Whisk the sugar and dry pudding mix in a bowl. Gradually whisk in the milk, cream, and vanilla until evenly mixed and the sugar has dissolved.

Pour into one Swirl Pint with its base closed, stopping at MAX FILL. Cover and freeze level for at least 24 hours.

For the BNH finish, stir the caramel sauce and maple syrup together in a small saucepan. Warm over low heat for 1-2 minutes, stirring, just until pourable. Let it cool to barely warm.

Follow the shared machine prep, then select SOFT SERVE -> ICE CREAM. RE-SPIN if crumbly before dispensing into four chilled bowls. Drizzle about 1 1/2 tablespoons of maple caramel over each serving and serve immediately.

The maple caramel goes on after dispensing. For a doughnut-shop finish, add one small ready-made plain doughnut to each bowl. Keep sauce and doughnuts outside the pint and nozzle.

The official vanilla base quantities and SOFT SERVE / ICE CREAM setting are retained. The maple caramel finish is a BNH serving suggestion.

Chocolate Raspberry Soft Serve

This is the chocolate-shop bowl for a night at home: chocolate soft serve, fresh raspberries, and one last drizzle of chocolate sauce.

1 Swirl Pint; about 4 small servings

About 15 minutes active, plus at least 24 hours freezing and any re-spin.

What you'll need

Chocolate base
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant chocolate pudding mix, dry powder (not cook-and-serve)
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Raspberry chocolate finish - BNH serving suggestion
  • 1 cup fresh raspberries
  • 1/4 cup prepared chocolate sauce

Let's make it

Whisk the sugar, dry pudding mix, and cocoa in a bowl, breaking up any cocoa lumps. Gradually whisk in the milk, cream, and vanilla until combined and the sugar has dissolved.

Pour into one Swirl Pint with its base closed, stopping at MAX FILL. Cover and freeze level for at least 24 hours. Follow the shared machine prep, then select SOFT SERVE -> ICE CREAM. If the result is crumbly, RE-SPIN until smooth before dispensing into four chilled bowls.

For the BNH finish, rinse the raspberries and gently pat them dry. Give each bowl 1/4 cup raspberries and 1 tablespoon chocolate sauce. Use the sauce at room temperature so the soft serve keeps its shape, then bring the bowls straight to the table.

Fresh berries and chocolate sauce belong on the finished bowls. Do not add them as mix-ins or send them through the soft-serve nozzle.

The official chocolate base quantities and SOFT SERVE / ICE CREAM setting are retained. The raspberry chocolate finish is a BNH serving suggestion.

Vanilla Scoops with Warm Cinnamon Apples

Warm cinnamon apples and cold vanilla make a cozy finish to dinner. Start the pint a day ahead.

1 Swirl Pint plus apple topping; about 4 small servings

About 25 minutes active, plus at least 24 hours freezing and any re-spin.

What you'll need

Scoopable vanilla base
  • 1 tablespoon full-fat cream cheese
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
Warm cinnamon apples - BNH serving suggestion
  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2-inch pieces (about 3 cups)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon water, plus 1 teaspoon at a time only if needed
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Let's make it

Soften the cream cheese in a microwave-safe bowl for 10 seconds. Stir in the sugar and vanilla for about a minute, until smooth. Gradually whisk in the cream and milk until combined and the sugar dissolves.

Pour into one Swirl Pint with its base closed, stopping at MAX FILL. Cover and freeze level for at least 24 hours.

The next day, make the BNH apples. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and 1 tablespoon water. Cook for 8-12 minutes, stirring often, until the apples are tender and the juices look syrupy. If the pan dries before the apples soften, add water 1 teaspoon at a time. Stir in the lemon juice and take the skillet off the heat.

Let the apples cool to comfortably warm while you process the pint. Follow the shared machine prep, then select SCOOP -> ICE CREAM. RE-SPIN if crumbly, checking between runs. Skip dispensing and MIX-IN.

Scoop the vanilla into four bowls. Spoon one-quarter of the apples and their sauce over each, and serve immediately.

The apples are an outside-the-pint topping. This adaptation leaves out the chocolate chips and MIX-IN step from the source recipe.

Source vanilla base and SCOOP / ICE CREAM retained; chips and MIX-IN omitted. Warm cinnamon apples are a BNH serving suggestion.
