THE BNH REVIEW

Small lamp. Lovely evening company.

We picked this Poldina Pro for the way its Dark Green finish sits with copper linen, cream ceramics and fall branches. The cordless design leaves the middle of a dinner table free of a trailing cable, while touch dimming lets you turn the light down when the conversation outlasts dessert. It is a thoughtful choice for someone who enjoys making a small everyday corner feel considered.

Who we picked it for

The host who sets a beautiful table on a Tuesday. The reader with a favorite chair. The friend who would rather have one useful, lovely object than another seasonal decoration to pack away.

A few things to know

Think of it as a pool of accent light for a table or corner. Reading comfort depends on placement and brightness. It needs recharging, and the IP65 lamp rating does not make the charging equipment an outdoor accessory. Check the selected US offer for its included power adapter.

A LITTLE LIGHT, A FEW LOVELY PLACES

Where would yours go?

A green table lamp, tea and a closed book on a nightstand beside cream bedding and a teal pillow.

The bedside pause

Leave a little light beside the bed, set down your tea, and give the end of the day a softer landing.

A green table lamp and a warm mug beside an open book and a gold velvet chair, with rain on the window.

The one-more-chapter chair

A favorite chair, the sound of rain, and a warm cup within reach. Start with the lamp on the side table, then adjust the brightness for your corner.

A green table lamp and two cups on a sheltered autumn terrace overlooking a city at dusk.

The last bit of terrace weather

Take a charged lamp to a dry table for that last cup outside. Its IP65 rating applies to the lamp; bring the charging base indoors.

APPLE, CARAMEL, A LITTLE CHOCOLATE

Something warm to sip

Three easy drinks for The Amber Hour, each made for two. Bring a warm mug to your favorite chair and let the evening slow down.

01

Cinnamon Apple Cider

An easy mug of apple and cinnamon, with a little lemon to keep the sweetness bright.

2 mugs | About 10 minutes

What you'll need

  • 2 cups (480 ml) still, nonalcoholic apple cider or apple juice
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar, maple syrup, or honey (optional)
  • 2 lemon slices
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/2 teaspoon butter (optional)

Let's make it

Let's warm the cider in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. When you see the first curls of steam, it's ready for the mugs.

Set a lemon slice and cinnamon stick in each heatproof mug. Divide the hot cider between them, split the optional sweetener and butter between the mugs, and stir. Let the cinnamon infuse briefly before sipping.

Serve warm, with the cinnamon sticks removed before drinking. Best made fresh.

Contains: Milk if using butter.

Adapted from Martinelli's Brew Hot Apple Toddy; quantities doubled, with gentler saucepan heating.

02

Caramel Chai Latte

A little caramel rounds out the tea's spice, making two smaller mugs for a slow evening.

2 small mugs | About 10 minutes

What you'll need

  • 2 chai tea bags
  • 6 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons (100 ml) boiling water
  • 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons (40 ml) caramel syrup
  • 1 cup (240 ml) milk
  • 1 tiny pinch sea salt (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cocoa powder, for dusting

Let's make it

Put the tea bags in a heatproof jug, pour over the boiling water, and steep for 4-5 minutes. Remove the bags, then stir in the caramel syrup and salt if using.

Meanwhile, gently warm the milk in a small saucepan until steaming. Whisk for a little foam if you like, then divide the tea between two mugs and pour in the milk. Finish each with half the cocoa.

Serve right away while warm; best made fresh.

Contains: Milk; check syrup and cocoa labels for other allergens.

Adapted from Twinings' Caramel Chai Latte; doubled for two, with saucepan-warmed milk and a measured cocoa garnish.

03

Cinnamon Hot Cocoa

Chocolate, cinnamon, and a little nutmeg make a softly spiced cocoa for two mugs.

2 mugs | About 5 minutes

What you'll need

  • 2 packets (1 oz / 28 g each) sweetened hot cocoa mix, such as Ghirardelli Classic
  • 1 3/4 cups (415 ml) milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons whipped cream (optional)

Let's make it

Divide the cocoa mix, cinnamon, and nutmeg between two heatproof mugs. Gently warm the milk in a small saucepan until steaming.

Pour a little hot milk into each mug and stir until smooth, then add the rest, sharing it evenly. Top each with 1 tablespoon of whipped cream if using, and settle in while it's warm.

Serve warm right after mixing; best made fresh.

Contains: Milk; check cocoa mix and whipped cream labels for other allergens.

Adapted from Ghirardelli's Mexican Hot Cocoa; doubled for two, with the optional cayenne omitted.
